Hello Lifespan Intelligence readers,

You can teach an old dog new tricks. More importantly, you can teach your brain new tricks after 40, 50, or 60, but only if your cardiovascular system is healthy enough to deliver the blood flow your brain needs. Neuroplasticity, the ability of your brain to form new neural connections and adapt to new information, does not disappear with age. But it becomes critically dependent on one thing: circulation.

Your brain is 2 percent of your body weight but consumes 20 percent of your blood flow. When cardiovascular health declines, blood flow to the brain declines, and with it, your capacity for learning, memory formation, and cognitive adaptation. The good news is that improving cardiovascular health directly enhances neuroplasticity, even in midlife and beyond.

This issue explores the brain-heart connection, how cardiovascular fitness drives neuroplasticity after 40, and what you can do to protect both.

Finally, Skincare That Boosts NAD+ At the Source

For decades, skincare has focused on aesthetic results. But we started by asking a different question: what if instead of trying to preserve our skin's youth, we prioritized optimizing our skin's function? That's how Aramore’s  NAD+ skincare was born.

Developed by Harvard & MIT scientists, Aramore is a skincare system based on skin’s performance, not just its appearance. NAD+ production slows down significantly as we age, and this causes all the telltale science of aging.

Aramore is the only skincare formulated to help skin produce NAD+ like much younger skin would. The result? Skin that’s stronger, firmer,  and more resilient, that not only looks better, but stays healthier over time.

Blood Flow Is the Bottleneck for Brain Plasticity

Neuroplasticity requires energy, oxygen, and nutrients, all delivered through blood flow. When you learn something new, your brain increases blood flow to the active regions to support the formation of new synaptic connections. But if your cardiovascular system is compromised by atherosclerosis, hypertension, or poor aerobic fitness, that blood flow response is blunted.

A 2019 study in Neurology followed over 1,500 adults aged 40 to 65 for 25 years and found that those with better cardiovascular fitness in midlife had significantly larger hippocampal volumes and better cognitive flexibility in later life. The researchers concluded that cardiovascular fitness in midlife is one of the strongest predictors of preserved neuroplasticity in aging. (Spartano et al., Neurology, 2019.)

The mechanism is straightforward: better cardiovascular fitness means better cerebral blood flow, which supports BDNF production, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, the protein that promotes the growth of new neurons and synapses.

Aerobic Exercise Is the Most Powerful Intervention

The single most effective way to enhance neuroplasticity after 40 is regular aerobic exercise. Not stretching. Not meditation. Not brain training apps. Aerobic exercise. A 2020 meta-analysis in NeuroImage reviewed 36 studies and found that adults who engaged in regular aerobic exercise showed measurable increases in hippocampal volume, improved executive function, and faster learning rates compared to sedentary controls. (Erickson et al., NeuroImage, 2020.)

The dose matters. Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, the kind where you can still hold a conversation but feel your heart rate elevated, for 150 minutes per week is the minimum effective dose. Higher intensities and longer durations produce even greater benefits. The exercise does not need to be complex. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or jogging all work, as long as your heart rate is elevated consistently.

The Cardiovascular Protection Blueprint

Protecting neuroplasticity after 40 requires protecting your cardiovascular system. This means controlling blood pressure, keeping cholesterol in check, avoiding smoking, managing stress, and maintaining aerobic fitness. A 2021 study in JAMA Cardiology found that adults over 50 with optimal cardiovascular health, defined by the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7 metrics, had cognitive performance equivalent to people 10 years younger. (Levine et al., JAMA Cardiology, 2021.)

Meet Karen, a 52-year-old who noticed her memory and learning ability declining. She could not pick up new skills as easily as she used to. Her doctor found her blood pressure was borderline high and her aerobic fitness was poor. She started walking 40 minutes daily, five days a week, and within three months, her blood pressure normalized and she reported feeling mentally sharper. Six months in, she successfully learned a new language, something she had tried and failed at two years earlier. The variable that changed was her cardiovascular fitness.

Cardiovascular Protection Blueprint for Neuroplasticity

150+ minutes weekly moderate aerobic exercise (brisk walking, cycling, swimming)

Blood pressure under 130/80 mmHg

LDL cholesterol managed through diet and medication if needed

Avoid smoking and limit alcohol

Manage chronic stress through sleep, movement, and recovery

KEY TAKEAWAYS

•       Neuroplasticity after 40 depends on cardiovascular health. Blood flow to the brain determines learning capacity and cognitive flexibility.

•       Better cardiovascular fitness in midlife predicts larger hippocampal volume and preserved neuroplasticity in later life.

•       Aerobic exercise is the most powerful intervention: 150 minutes weekly of moderate-intensity activity enhances brain plasticity.

•       Protecting cardiovascular health through BP control, cholesterol management, and fitness preserves cognitive performance for decades.

Your brain can adapt, learn, and rewire itself at any age, but only if your cardiovascular system can deliver the blood flow it needs. If you want to preserve your ability to learn new skills, adapt to change, and maintain cognitive flexibility into your 60s, 70s, and beyond, cardiovascular health is not optional. It is foundational.

Start with 30 minutes of brisk walking, five days a week. Your heart will strengthen, your brain will benefit, and your neuroplasticity will respond.
